In education, particularly in B-schools that use the case-method approach, assessments have traditionally moved beyond rote memorization, pushing students to think critically, applying concepts and insights more meaningfully. The case method approach is something I learned when I joined the Asian Institute of Management; it centers around real-world scenarios, often with open-ended questions and no single “correct” answer. This encourages students to weigh perspectives, make informed decisions, and articulate their reasoning—skills crucial in any business context. At AIM, we often joke that our students are wired to respond with 'it depends.'

Yesterday, we welcomed the ninth cohort of MSDS students at the Asian Institute of Management. It's so surreal that we're here... What's more surreal is that this will be the last time I'll welcome a cohort as Program Director. As I step down after seven amazing years, I reflect on our incredible journey since 2017. From designing a pioneering curriculum presented in prestigious business education gatherings globally to consistently ranking in the top 3 in Far East Asia and training nearly 300 data scientists now leading in their fields, it's been an honor. I'm excited for what the future holds and will share more about my next steps soon.

Here, I share a groundbreaking two-year AI R&D project at the Asian Institute of Management, showcasing the power of triple helix collaboration between academia, industry, and government. Our team developed ensemble deep learning models to automate Unistar Credit and Finance Corporation's repossessed motorcycle evaluation process, reducing assessment time from one hour to just five minutes per vehicle. This innovation, partially funded by the Department of Science and Technology, not only enhanced operational efficiency but also set a new industry standard. The project faced challenges in integrating with existing IT systems, emphasizing the importance of close collaboration. As Project Leader, I highlight the crucial roles played by our dedicated team, industry partners, and government support in driving this successful innovation that promises significant impact on business processes and potential cost savings for end-users.

At the 2024 AACSB ICAM, joining a distinguished plenary panel alongside Asian Institute of Management President and Dean Jikyeong Kang, Dean Saïd Business School, University of Oxford Soumitra Dutta, C. T. Bauer College of Business (University of Houston) Dean Paul A. Pavlou to discuss AI in business education—whether it’s a threat or an opportunity—brought me back to 2018 ICAM in Hawaii. That year, Balaji Padmanabhan and I urged business schools to reimagine not just their curricula but all aspects of their operations and offerings in light of Data Science and AI (DSAI). At that time, fewer than 20% of top businesses saw AI’s significant impact.
